Thank you and God Bless!

  • BUCK is a six year old Buckskin Tobiano Paint who we got when he was two years old. We bought him from a breeder.  Buck had been bought by another person previously, but the man who purchased him got ill and was no longer able to keep him.  So, back to the breeding farm he went.

When we first saw Buck, he was the only
gelding in the far back pasture with about 25 fillies.  He stood about 50 feet behind all those little girls with his head hung low; looking just as pitiful as could be.  He had a very heavy winter coat, which made him look like a shaggy Shetland pony, and he had tons of warts all over his muzzle. What a sight! Why did we get him?  Because of how sad he looked, of course! Just picture him all alone and looking so forlorn!  You would have gotten him, too! He wasn’t trained, and we wanted a trained horse for our children, but God knew what we needed or who needed us!

Anyway, he came home with us very demure and unsightly.  After his winter coat shed out and we got him all groomed, he looked gorgeous! …well, except for the warts!  Little by little, though and the warts started falling off of his muzzle.  We put him in the pasture with our two rescued Arabians and another gelding, Kastanje, and suddenly Buck came to life!  They played like colts, rearing up together, playing tug-a-halter and playing the ‘I can get you to your knees first’ game.  They were relentless out in the pastures together. He loved his new home and his new friends! And, his new owners loved him!

After four years, Buck is now second in command in the herd.  You would never have known he was in such a sad state when we first saw him!  Buck is the most gorgeous horse – especially when he is cleaned up!  You may hear him called Bucky, Sloppy Joe or just plain old 'BUCK'.  Ok, well, Sloppy Joe came about because he is messy in all aspects of his life!

Buck is one of our therapy/program horses and excelling in leaps and bounds because he loves his job and we love him!

  • Midnight

Hi, my name is Midnight.  I was the very first rescue horse at GERTH. (SEE MY STORY ON THE 'ABOUT US' PAGE)

I am a very proud, purebred, black, 7 year old, Polish Arabian. I absolutly adore children and have a bottomless heart full of love for them! Another favorite of mine is molasses, plain or as a topping for treats, horse feed, carrots or apples. Just give me some molasses! I love showing off in the pasture and while riding and the 'ooohs' and the 'aahhhhs' will totally complete my day; but I like the carrots a lot too!

KINJI
is our second rescue horse.  He is a 14 year old polish Arabian gelding. He endured much more physical and mental abuse than the others; therefore, the journey to his healing is taking much longer. He loves our whole family and has built a trust with all of us.  When visitors come out, he is very apprehensive, but with a little coaxing, he will usually come around.  Although we may never be able to use him for the riding program, he will always have a safe home with us.

When we first met Kinji (we named him that because we knew he would be 'King'), he stood in the corner of a small outside "stall" with the hot sun beating down on him day after day.  When he ate, he would put his head to the side so he could keep watch of anyone or anything that might come near him.  He had whip marks all over his chest and terrible fear in his beautiful big brown eyes.

When we first saw him, he broke our hearts.  He was so fearful and sad.  We asked if we could try to touch him and were told it was ok - at our own risk.  After very carefully getting the leadrope on him, I took him walking around the big pasture.  Day after day we came to visit him, walking him in the pasture and talking to him.  We also continued praying over him and talking to God about what a magnificent animal he was.  One day I went by to see him and one of the 'pseudo-cowboys' who took care of the horses, hit one of the other animals out there with a glass beer bottle.  We knew we immediately had to get Kinji out of where he was.  The only problem was that he wasn’t free. We did have to pay to get him out of where he was living. We didn't have the money, but we did get it scraped together. Fortunately, Kinji had built a trust with us, so it wasn't too difficult to move him.

We continue to work with him to keep the trust and unconditional love building.  I have been able to get up on him to ride both with a saddle and bareback, but only under supervision.  As expected, Kinji is ‘king of the pasture’ and so incredibly beautiful when he is watching over his herd.  When startled, he stands totally erect with his beautiful Arabian head held high, tail high and he sounds an alarming snort as a warning.  The journey to complete healing will be a longer one with Kinji - but we have the time and patience and most of all, the unconditional love.

Hi, my name is Kastanje. You may know me as GERTH's youngest program horse. The way I ride though, you would never guess I'm so young as you can put anybody on me; young, old, beginner or experienced.  Just look at the pics and you can see all kinds of people on my back!  I love people and I love my job!

I'm a 3 year old chestnut, solid Paint Quarter Horse with lots of love to share! I enjoy carrots & apples and lots of love from children and adults. Actually, I can't get enough attention, so come by and see me soon; but bring the treats!

Romeo - The Wise and Gentle One

Hi, my name is Romeo, or you might hear me called Romey.

I'm a 22 year old buckskin Quarter Horse gelding and I have the most beautiful flowing mane and tail you have ever seen!  When you come to visit me, look at my beautiful eyes, too.  They are just like marbles and they are green, brown and blue in color. Oh, by the way, when you come to visit me, I love carrots and enjoy lots of riding and lots of attention!
