We are always in need of volunteers to help our Programs be a success! Whether you have experience with horses, children or in the office, we have a place for you!
Session Volunteer
As a session volunteer, you will be assisting riders during the riding lessons. You will work as a 3 person team comprised of a horse leader and 2 sidewalkers who help support the child. There is one lead sidewalker who works with the child on their balance, stretching, proper riding etiquette and voice projection.
Volunteers must be at least 13 years old and leaders must have completed our horse-volunteer orientation.
The Lead Horse Walker is the person who leads the horse through the routine, i.e. stopping at the mailbox, over the cavalettis, around the poles, etc. The LHW needs to be alert to any emergencies and be able to stop the horse instantly. The LHW does not communicate with the child during the riding session.
There are two sidewalkers for each horse. One is the lead sidewalker and one is a support sidewalker. The LSW will be working with the child on their balance, stretching and proper riding etiquette during the session. They will also work on voice projection and proper enunciation of words. The other sidewalker is there for support of the child only.
While grooming and tacking up prior to riding, the LSW will work with the child on horse safety, grooming techniques and tacking up the horse. They will work with the child on the basic parts of the horse/saddle, on proper enunciation of words and any sensory disorders the child may have.
The support sidewalker should be located at the rear of the horse during ground program and for support of the child during the riding program. The sidewalker will not interact with the child except where praise is welcomed. They must not leave their position for any reason. If there is an emergency, they need to remain calm and state 'safety whoa' loud enough for the Horse Leader to hear.
We will provide all information you need to put together the Newsletter!
